Why collaboration is more powerful than competition
Do you find yourself looking at others in your industry and comparing yourself?
Do you spend hours scrolling through Instagram wondering how they are doing it whilst you are struggling?
Do you obsess over your local “competition” and worry you’ll lose clients to them?
If you answered yes to these questions, you’re more than likely stuck in a competitive mindset, which, before you get this wrong it’s important to make clear there is nothing wrong with some healthy competition. However, obsessing over it is ultimately going to harm your business in the long run!
First of all, STOP comparing yourself to others, I can guarantee you, the business owners you are getting a green eyed monster over are coming up against the same struggles as you are. We all experience similar set backs and difficulties in business. The problems are always going to show up, and these problems won’t ruin your business…Ultimately, what will ruin it will be trying to deal with the problems on your own… This is where collaboration comes in.
We are often lone wolves in this industry, we work on our own and face all the trials and tribulations of running a business on our own and this can really take its toll in the long run. We have found that having a strong community of people that we trust in the industry has helped our businesses grow. It’s so nice offloading problems onto others and sharing ideas. Collaboration brings together multiple perspectives and ideas.
Collaboration with your “competitors” can bring about a sense of trust amongst peers and can build relationships and enhance your reputation in the industry. Collaborating can also help you reach your business goals faster with a larger expanse of expertise and connections.
This industry is big, like, really huge. There is more than enough clients for all of us to share. By being too protective and not open to the idea of a bigger circle, you are subconsiously limiting yourself and your business from growth.
Personally, over the years I have had some amazing experiences including networking events overseas, red carpet parties and fabulous nights out, all with individuals that you would class as my “competition”. Not once at any of these events did I feel like I was competing or being judged by others. I just felt like I was in a room full of people that like to see other people do well.
Above everything else, its just simply nice to be nice. You will sleep so much better at night when you stop scrolling on instagram, comparing yourself to everyone, you stop searching all the local salons price lists religiously to make sure you’re not being undercut. You won’t care about any of that anymore, because you will be confident in focusing on yourself, knowing you have a circle of amazing people around you.
